Choosing to be Childfree
Exploring Childfree

Choosing not to have children is, in many ways, choosing to go against the prevailing society.

Parenthood is assumed (how often are we asked, "How many children do you have?" rather than "Do you have children?") and those without them are often assumed to be childLESS, to be LESS because they do not have children.

The childFREE lifestyle is a renunciation of this attitude. Being childfree means being truly happy with who you are and how your life is arranged (most of the time - nobody's happy all the time. :), and having the life that you want.

Some people are offended by the term 'childfree'. I will be writing an article on this shortly, but for now... a very intelligent lady on the "Pride and Joy" mailing list (more information in the "Childfree Resources" section) said:

I have one friend (who's childless for now) who took offense. I said, "Well, what about those food products at the store which say 'dairy-free' or 'wheat-free'? Dairy or wheat can be very nutritious, and yet for some people, they cause problems. It's a descriptive term which means that something is missing, and it's not a bad thing --- it's a good thing in this particular case".
Being childfree is a good thing in my particular case, and it may turn out to be the same for you.
